Urgency + Optimism = Action: Lessons in Leadership from Jason Knauf LVO

22 October 2026

“Pessimism is the greatest threat to the world.”

This powerful message from Jason Knauf LVO, CEO of The Earthshot Prize, set the tone for Echo Research's final Leadership Roundtable of 2026.

In a world shaped by political polarisation, climate scepticism and short-term thinking, Jason offered a refreshingly optimistic perspective on environmental progress, leadership and the power of collective action.

His message was clear: solutions to some of the world's greatest environmental challenges already exist, and optimism, supported by evidence, can inspire meaningful change.

The discussion highlighted four key lessons for leaders in communications, sustainability and business:

  1. Optimism inspires action. Challenging pessimism with evidence, compelling stories and visible examples of progress builds confidence and encourages change.
  2. Look outwards, not just inwards. Trust, relevance and reputation are earned through the value organisations create for others, not simply through internal ambition.
  3. Resilience creates opportunity. The environmental transition is about more than managing risk. It offers opportunities for innovation, economic growth and a better future. Through its global network and the support of HRH Prince William, The Earthshot Prize is helping pioneering environmental solutions gain the visibility and connections needed to scale.
  4. What unites us is greater than what divides us. By shifting the focus from problems to solutions, leaders can encourage collaboration and demonstrate what can be achieved together.

With 15 remarkable finalists heading towards The Earthshot Prize awards in Mumbai on 17 November, there is much to celebrate and even more to learn.

Our thanks to Jason Knauf for an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion, to Sally Osman LVO for guiding the conversation, and to all our guests for their valuable contributions.

A fitting conclusion to Echo’s 2026 Leadership Roundtable series, reinforcing that reputation is not simply about what organisations say, but about being trusted for what they make possible.

The future isn't something we wait for. It's something we help create.
